Welcome to my fifth and sixth grade combination classroom. I am planning an enjoyable, challenging, and exciting curriculum. I am entering my ninth year in teaching. I taught in Vallejo four years as a K-1 teacher. I then taught a fourth fifth combination class of thirty five students in Fairfield. My early teaching experiences took place in a poorly funded district with predominantly low social economic status. I'm now on my fourth year at Wilson. I've taught third, two years of fifth, and presently a fifth sixth grade combination class. All of my experiences in teaching have enriched my teaching abilities. I look forward to this school year!!

Homework
Every child must read accelerated reading books for thirty minutes and complete a reading log. Every week seven vocabulary words will be assigned to define, illustrate and write a sentence showing meaning. Spelling tests will be given on Thursdays. Poetry will be given on Mondays and must be read every night to increase fluency. Math will be nightly. The best way to keep track of your child's assignments is to check your child's planner. Your child is responsible for writing down homework in their planner. I will send home progress reports twice a month. I expect progress reports to be looked over and discussed with the child. These must be signed and returned to school the following Monday.Click on homework to see the calendar.

Progress Reports
The weekly progress reports are a way to inform the child and the parent of weekly progress on assignments, classwork, and tests. Each class has three components that are factored into grading. They are classwork, homework, and tests. If you look at the dates on assignments, then you can tell if you child has any missing assignments for the week. Missing assignments remain missing until the new quarter. I do have them complete assignments on the bench, but they do not recieve credit because we do not accept late work. Also accelerated reading has recently been addded as a class. Many students have read several books, in fact as a class we have read seventy-two books. These books are leveled to meet the needs of every childs individual level. If your child fails an AR test, then two things could have happened. The book is too hard, or they didn't read the book. Please make sure a quiet place is available for reading. The children are given choice time on Fridays when they have completed all their work for the week. It is important that progress reports are signed and returned to school, or the child will make a call home.I appreciate you signing and returning them promptly.

Conferences
Conferences are a time to meet and look at the strengths and weaknesses of every child. This is an opportunity to become a team and work together to make sure your child is successful in school. Please be prompt because conferences are scheduled for twenty minutes each. I have twenty-eight conferences, so we need to keep the conferences on time. I appreciate you taking the time to meet with me. It is important that your child attend the conference too! I look forward to meeting everyone.

AR Reading Program
This reading program is newly adopted at our school. I'm so excited about the amount of reading that is taking place in the classroom and the home. Our class has read over 150 books!!! And still counting!!! In fact we read 100 books, so we can donate to children that don't have books. It is wonderful. I'm giving out homework passes every time a book is complete with a successful passage of the AR quiz. I'm also taking two students a month to lunch at Urapan for reading. The first two hard working readers are: Melissa and Julio. They had the most points, thus completed the most reading for the month. Next month will be another criteria,so that all readers have an opprtunity for lunch with me!!! Some students are finishing books in one day. I'm proud of all the reading that is taking place in room 12!!!
