Welcome to my fifth grade classroom. I am planning an enjoyable, challenging, and exciting curriculum. I am entering my tenth year in teaching. I taught in Vallejo four years as a K-1 teacher. I then taught a fourth fifth combination class of thirty- five students in Fairfield. My early teaching experiences took place in a poorly funded district with predominantly low social economic status. I'm now on my fifth year at Wilson. I've taught third, two years of fifth, and a fifth sixth grade combination class. All of my experiences in teaching have enriched my teaching abilities. I look forward to this school year!!

Please click on homework to see the calendar for tests and important dates. Also I do not accept late work, unless the child is absent. Please keep in mind that sometimes dates of tests may get put at a later date due to me having to reteach. Sometimes other events may come up too. I will never move the test date or due date to an earlier date. » read more...
Modified - 12/02/2009 03:49pm Math Fluency
Every child must know all their math facts. Every concept in 5th grade math has to do with math facts, especially multiplication. I will give the 100 math fluency quiz, every Thursday. The goal is to complete 100 facts in four minutes. Each year students have to go a minute faster. Next year they will have three minutes. Please support your child with their facts. Most children will not practice independently. You will be able to see their growth on the progress report, if they are practicing. Once they know their facts fluently, then they will find math becomes easier. If your child is spending all their time trying to figure out a basic fact, then they can't complete multi-step problems, such as decimal division. Every child must be able to perform basic math facts with automaticity. The key is practice. » read more...
Modified - 09/01/2009 10:36pm Accelerated Reader
Every child is reading a book from their ZPD which is their zone of proximal development. This means they may read book a little below their level or a book at their level. This allows for many choices. Of course the lower the level, then the lower the points. The children are given point goals weekly. For example, most children have goals for 1-3 points a week. On average most books are worth 1-3 points. This means every child is reading a book a week, or a book at least every two weeks. I'm keeping track of each child's reading goals, so you will be able to see their AR on their progress reports. I will also award two children monthly with lunch at Urapan. It is a way for me to express how proud I am of all their reading!!! I would love for every child to make it to lunch, so read, read, read!!! It is important for every child to read thirty minutes every night in order to reach their goal. The state standard for reading is thirty minutes a night. Please support your child by making sure they have completed their reading. They may read aloud to you, or you may even do shared reading. Another helpful hint is to have a conversation with your child about their reading. This will increase their comprehension. Reading with your child will not only help your child in all academic areas, but also create a special time for you and your child. » read more...
Modified - 12/02/2009 03:44pm Accelerated Goal Deadline
Accelerated Reading is going well. I'm very proud of all the reading that is taking place in 5th grade. Each child has a new goal this trimester. Also the responsibility of keeping track of points is now on the child. I guided them the first grading period, but now I'd like them to become responsible. I will however write on their weekly progress report how many points they have at the end of each week. If you notice your child does not have many points, then please remind them to complete the required thirty minutes of nightly reading. » read more...
