Summary: Every child must know all their math facts. Every concept in 5th grade math has to do with math facts, especially multiplication. I will give the 100 math fluency quiz, every Thursday. The goal is to complete 100 facts in four minutes. Each year students have to go a minute faster. Next year they will have three minutes. Please support your child with their facts. Most children will not practice independently. You will be able to see their growth on the progress report, if they are practicing. Once they know their facts fluently, then they will find math becomes easier. If your child is spending all their time trying to figure out a basic fact, then they can't complete multi-step problems, such as decimal division. Every child must be able to perform basic math facts with automaticity. The key is practice.
