English Language Development (ELD)
A number of students at Wilson School speak languages other than English in their homes. This presents a special challenge as they work to mast the academic skills necessary to be successful in school and beyond. Our English Language Development (ELD) program is designed to h asten the development of their English language skills and support that success. Students are tested for their English proficiency and provided assistance in English loanguage development by a credentialed teacher.

Individual learning plans are written by the ELD teacher and their classroom teacher to set special goals for these students to develop their English skills while they master the academic content of their grade level, Understanding that each student's ultimate success in school and beyond is based on his or her English language ability, the ultimate goal of the ELD program is English Language fluency for each student.

English Language Development, Content Standards

The English–Language Arts Content Standards for California Public Schools (1998) and the Reading/Language Arts Framework for California Public Schools (1999), both adopted by the State Board of Education, define what all students in California, including students learning English as a second language, are expected to know and be able to do. The English-language development (ELD) standards are designed to supplement the English–language arts content standards to ensure that limited-English proficient (LEP) students (now called English learners in California) develop proficiency in both the English language and the concepts and skills contained in the English–language arts content standards.
